There are no less than 14 different Joels mentioned in the bible. It was a common name then and is still one today, particularly among Jewish people. The only thing that we know for sure about Joel, the prophet and the writer of the book that bares his name is what he says about himself. In the first verse we read: “The word of the Lord that came to Joel son of Pethuel.” That’s it. Nothing else. Not even a shred of additional information was written to clue us in on this man. All we have are the names “Joel” and “Pethuel.” So, lets go with that. “Joel” means “the Lord is God.” “Pethuel” means “vision of God.” Interestingly enough, the book of Joel is about both “Joel” and “Pethuel,” – God is Lord of all and God gave His word or vision to the son of “vision of God.” Father and son worked together to impart wisdom to the world. Joel is sometimes called the “annoymymous” prophet because we only get his name. Like father like son, because Pethuel is just as inconspicuous. I find that this is welcomed news. God, more often than not, uses the least well known, the least in ability, the least in power, to accomplish His great tasks. You are valued! Even if no one on this earth thinks so, God does. And God will use you to establish the fact that God is Lord and that God gives vision to those who are his. Trust God. And allow God to move in you so that you can be all God intended for you to be. Brian
