Today is my son’s birthday. As I think back to his birth and recall all the preparations we made, I
remember feeling very excited and a little afraid. We had his nursery all ready with a crib, a changing table, a rocking chair, and all the normal baby stuff. I was told that the baby would probably arrive the first week of December. And so we waited.
I wonder how Mary must have felt as she anticipated the birth of her son, Jesus. She didn’t have a nursery to get ready, but I’m sure she was excited and also a little afraid. Did she wonder what he would look like? Did she picture how his life would be? And so she waited.
Today we are getting ready to welcome the Holy Child. What are you doing to prepare? I’m sure your tree is decorated, and you are busy wrapping all the presents. Perhaps some cookies will be baked. But have you taken the time to prepare your heart for the gift of this baby?
We need to take time to seek God’s love and his grace. He gives it to us freely. Let us calmly approach the coming celebration and truly enjoy the birth of God’s only son, and all that it means. And so we wait.
Dear gracious Heavenly Father,
Be with us as we wait for the coming of Jesus. Help us to open our hearts and minds to the true meaning of Christmas. Help us to prepare ourselves to welcome Him with open arms and celebrate his birth. We wait with anticipation for his glorious arrival.
